Homemade Basic Dough

A simple homemade dough that's perfect for bread, pizza, or pastries.

Ingredients
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar (optional, for slightly sweet dough)
1 teaspoon active dry yeast (optional, for leavened dough)
¾ cup warm water (around 110°F or 43°C)
2 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil

Method

In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar (if using), and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Make a well in the center, then pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir with a spoon until it starts to come together, then knead with your hands on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour; if too dry, add a splash of water. Shape into a ball, cover with a damp cloth, and let rest for 30 minutes to 1 hour if leavening is desired, or use immediately for unleavened dough.
